ADOPT PETS

Give Animals A Happier Home

While in quarantine, you may be bored with nothing exciting to do. Fear no more. You can now easily bring a new buddy into your home under a budget. You can browse online to find a pet that best suits you, then go to a local pet shelter to pick it up. If you don't want to keep an animal as a long-term pet, you can foster dogs, cats, and others until they find a new home.

Follow the guide below to see if you are the right person to take care of a pet!

1. IS GETTING A PET RIGHT FOR YOU?

Providing all the needs for a pet is hard work.

Ask yourself these questions:

1. Do you actually love animals?

2. Are you financially stable so that you can care for a pet?

3. Is your home the right environment for a pet to live in?

4. Are you responsible enough to always care for your pet?

5. Do you have another pet at home who will be compatible with another pet?

If all your answers are YES, go ahead to the next step.

2. ASKING OTHERS

If you live with a family, a roommate, a friend, etc, you have to consider their opinions about you getting a pet.

Have a meeting with the person or people you live with and consider the following questions:

1. Does everyone agree that having a pet is a good idea?

2. Will all people equally take care of the pet?

3. Will everyone love the pet unconditionally?

If all the answers are YES, move on to the next step.

3. FINDING SHELTERS

Adopting from a shelter is the best option when getting a pet. You can save animal lives.

Browse on the internet local shelters that are currently still accepting adoptions.

Discuss the following questions with everyone in the household:

1. Is the shelter somewhere someone is willing to drive to?

2. Is the shelter accepting adoptions at this time?

If all your answers are YES, go to the next step.

4. FINDING THE RIGHT PET

There are many different options of pets that you can choose from. Choose an animal that you like. Dogs? Cats? Whatever you choose. If you are choosing a pet with a lot of breeds, such as a dog, we suggest taking an online quiz, such as

https://www.pedigree.com/getting-a-new-dog/breed-match. Choose a breed (or multiple), and go with it.

Consider these questions while choosing:

1. Is the pet suitable for your home environment?

2. Do you know all the pros and cons about it?

If all your answers are YES, continue on.

5. GETTING THE PET

Many shelters allow you to book online before getting it. If not, you can message your local shelter about your chosen pet. Schedule a time, if possible, and go to the shelter. Be sure to wear a mask if you can!

Pick up your pet and be sure to make sure it has all its shots. You can talk to your shelter about this matter.

Most commonly, people will adopt dogs. If this is the case, check in with the following questions.

1. Does your dog have DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus) shots?

2. If your dog is older than one year, does it have rabies shots?

If NO, please contact your shelter or local vet. If YES, continue.

6. CARE AND LOVE YOUR PET

If you made it to this last step, congrats! You just saved a life. Now, time to care for your pet.

If you got a dog, here's a list of things you should buy for your a dog:

3. Dog bed

4. Cage

5. Fur brush (depending on the type of dog)
